Knitting low shafts against the shoe collar
We knit low cut and ankle pairs for shoes that show the ankle bone. When the back of the shoe moves with each step, short knit cuffs can slip down into the heel cup. Here is how our heel tab, knit thickness and arch bands work inside the shoe.
How the shoe collar moves against knit
A stiff shoe collar presses against the back of the leg with every step you take. When a low cut sock ends right beneath that rim, the shoe pushes downward on the edge of the cuff. Thin knit has little friction against the leather or fabric lining of a heel counter. The cuff slowly folds into the shoe cavity as the foot flexes. Once the top edge rolls below the collar, the shaft bunches beneath the heel. Our ankle heights bring the cuff above that moving contact point, while our low cut pairs use a heel tab to keep the top edge upright.
What the heel tab does on low cuts
A heel tab is an extra patch of knit that rises above the back collar of the low cut sock. We build this lip taller than the rest of the cuff so it sits between your skin and the shoe rim. The shoe pushes against this raised knit instead of catching the top edge of the sock. Because the tab extends upward, the tension across the heel pocket stays anchored. It gives the back of the sock something to hold against the shoe counter. That extra height keeps the whole footbed from sliding forward into the toe box as you walk.
How cushion changes room in the shoe
We knit extra loops through the sole and arch on our thicker boxes. These added loops make the bottom of the sock heavier and softer underfoot. A cushioned sole takes up physical space inside your footwear. If your shoe fits tight across the bridge, a thicker footbed lifts the foot and tightens the lacing zone. Cushion also adds yarn mass, which holds more warmth throughout the day. A flat knit sole keeps the shoe volume unchanged. Choosing between them depends on how much spare room you have inside the shoe and how warm you want the footbed to rest.
Why we knit an arch band across the middle
The arch band is a firm band of ribbing knit through the midfoot of the sock. It circles the foot between the heel pocket and the ball of the toe. Without this tension, a low cut sock can twist sideways or slip toward the front of the shoe during movement. The band pulls the knit against the curve of the arch so the sole stays aligned with your foot. It holds the heel pocket square against the back of the heel. When the midfoot stays anchored, the cuff does not have to fight the weight of a shifting sole.
When a crew shaft is the easier answer
Sometimes a short cuff is the wrong tool for a tall or stiff shoe collar. A crew shaft climbs well past the ankle bone and sits flat against the lower calf. Because the cuff grips the leg high above the footwear, the shoe collar never touches the top edge of the knit. The shaft cannot be dragged down into the heel cup by walking friction. Caring for your low cut knit pairs
Wash our low cut and ankle pairs in a cold cycle with mild detergent. Placing short socks inside a mesh bag prevents small cuffs from snagging on hooks or buttons. Lay them flat to dry overnight to protect the stretch in the arch band and top cuff.
